Early History
The story of Evolution in Harmony begins on March 11, 2020—a day the world fell silent. As the COVID-19 pandemic brought music-making to a halt, singers everywhere were forced apart, unable to do what they loved most: sing together.
During this unprecedented time, our chorus took shape under the name Brothers in Harmony, a long-standing chorus within the Barbershop Harmony Society based out of Hamilton Square, NJ. Like countless choruses around the globe, we adapted, finding connection through Zoom rehearsals. While technology allowed us to keep the music alive, it could never fully replace the joy, energy, and camaraderie of singing together in person. We held onto one shared hope—that one day, our voices would reunite and chords would ring once again.
That hope became reality on June 16, 2021, when we gathered for our first in-person rehearsal since the pandemic began. It was more than a rehearsal—it was the beginning of a new chapter. A moment of renewal. An era of change. An era of Evolution.
By the end of 2023, that evolution took its next step. The Brothers in Harmony made the decision to join the Hunterdon Choral Alliance, embracing a new identity and a new name: Evolution in Harmony. This change reflected who we had become and who we aspired to be.
Principles of Evolution in Harmony
Today, Evolution in Harmony is committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment—one that builds brotherhood, celebrates growth, and honors the teachings and foundations that shaped our past. We believe that to truly evolve, we must embrace change while staying rooted in harmony—together.
The culture of Evolution in Harmony is based upon the following eight principles:
Evolution In Harmony singers are good people. We are kind and respectful of each other, on the stage and off. We pay careful attention to those leading activities during rehearsal.
Evolution In Harmony singers are dedicated. We each strive to be prepared for the next rehearsal. We look to build upon our best personal and group moments from the last rehearsal or performance.
Evolution In Harmony singers continually grow. We take full advantage of what we learn from our musical leadership and resources to be a better performer each time we take the stage. Everyone has a place no matter what level of singer they may be because everyone can either learn or teach. Each member of Evolution has the opportunity to grow from singer to musician to performer to artist.
Evolution In Harmony singers are supportive. Some of the best coaching can come from within the chorus and not just from directors. When the time is right, we may offer kind and gentle suggestions and receive them as helpful. We trust each other in this regard.
Evolution In Harmony singers contribute their time and talents. Our singers are talented, and far beyond the musical gifts we share. We each have a willingness to help lead and see to the day-to-day success of the group by lending our time, experience and professional skills when possible and needed.
Evolution In Harmony singers are thrilling to watch. Performances impress our audiences not just from great vocals, but also from engaging performances that touch the souls of our fans.
Evolution In Harmony singers relish in the friendships and comfortable environment. We do not let our own personal views, goals or agendas interfere with others’ participation and enjoyment of the group.
Evolution In Harmony singers believe in the vision “Everyone in Harmony”. Each singer is unique, and yet, equally valued. Our personal backgrounds are respected and recognized as being special, yet everyone’s voice is equally vital to our success. We strive to cultivate an environment where everyone is at home in Evolution In Harmony regardless of their individuality.
